Material Girl's Guide to Mother's Day
Hello shoppers!
Mother’s Day is in just under a week and so I figured I’d pop in with a quick and special edition of Material Girl!
In general, my rule when gifting is you should buy someone something that they might want, but that they would never treat themselves to; maybe they think it’s too frivolous or too expensive. And so our job, as gift givers, is to give them something where they get that kid-on-xmas-morning-who-just-opened-the-number-one-item-on-their-list feeling.
Here are some unique and chic recommendations for moms of all tastes and gift givers of all budgets.
Hermes Scarf: This one really needs no explanation — this is a forever gift that your mother will wear and cherish. The great thing about gifting an Hermes scarf is you can go small (and more affordable), and buy her a Twilly for her hair or to wear tied around her neck, or larger (and pricier) and go for a more traditional square silk scarf. But no matter what you purchase, it will come beautifully wrapped in the classic Hermes orange box and make for a luxurious gifting experience.
Paul Newman Biography: It’s actually scientifically proven that any mom with even a remote attraction to men is into Paul Newman and this gift really doesn’t need any explanation past that.
Gluggle Jug: These are incredibly chic and coastal piece for a dining room, a living room, a kitchen etc. — they come in a million colors and can be used as vases, or actual drinking jugs, or simply as decor.
Art of French Cooking Julia Child: If your mother likes cooking, this makes a beautiful and iconic gift; the historical significance of this book set, in my opinion, offsets the rule that you should not buy your mom anything that sends a message that she should do more domestics. They’re also beautiful and will look great out on a coffee table or stacked on a kitchen counter.
Tiffany Hardware Bracelet: If you really want to splurge, this bracelet is the perfect piece; it’s versatile, sturdy, and easier to size than buying say, a ring. Tiffany gold has this very specific color to it that just goes with everything and she’ll get a hefty Blue Box with it to sit proudly on her dresser.
Mademoiselle Body Shimmer: Another gift that was a huge winner in my house — this body shimmer from Chanel is scented with their classic Mademoiselle fragrance and gives off a subtle shimmer; it’s also a dry oil so it’s not sticky or greasy at all. Wearable and perfect for summer.
John Derian Dish: There are approximately six thousand of these to choose from on the website so it’s literally impossible that they do not have one your mom won’t love. They’re beautiful and unique pieces that she won’t find anywhere else and perfect for displaying little bits and bobs of jewelry etc. on her nightstand or dresser.
Tamar Mogendorff Pillow: We have easily 10 of these scattered around my house — mostly the shell and the shy pearl versions and they are so feminine and special, and importantly — really beautifully made. A large shell makes a great addition to a couch or bed, a small one is perfect for a cozy chair, and a pearl and shell set is the ultimate gift in my opinion.
Chanel Hand Care Kit: The Chanel hand cream is the most beautiful and luxurious everyday product; combine that with their signature La Base, a neutral and strengthening peachy sheer polish and your mom will be able to give herself simple, quick manicures whenever she needs a little self care.
La Perla Silk Pajamas: I’ve written a million times on here about the silk La Perla slips; I have one in virtually every color and it’s pretty much all I sleep in and I’ve gotten my own mom into them as well. They’re definitely an investment piece, but they feel like sleeping in nothing and it’s the kind of item she might not think of treating herself to, but that she will get a lot of wear and enjoyment out of.
Eberjey Pajamas: If your mom isn’t the silk PJ type, Eberjey makes the softest modal sets that you can have embroidered with her initials.
Ginori 1735 Vase: Another investment piece; a Ginori vase is a magnificent addition to any room. If your mom is all set on vases, their dishes and jewelry boxes are equally as special.
